Secrets hidden in the hills

Secrets hidden in the hillsA weekend in Zagorje

If you’d like to spend a weekend in nature, relax and instead of looking at the screen, look at the lush greenery of Northwest Croatia, join us! On our weekend tour, we offer more than relaxation – a story of prehistoric times in this region and tasting of local wine and delicacies.

1. dan: GAVEZNICA – LUNCH – SPA

In the morning we head from Zagreb towards Gaveznica, a fossil volcano. In the last phases of its activity, semi-precious stones like agate, calcedony and opals were formed. Inactive for millions of years, this spot is ideal for a light walk and start of our story about the hidden treasures of the hills of Zagorje.
After a walk with a local guide, it’s time to discover the secrets of Zagorje through smell and taste – a wine tasting and lunch in one of the local wineries.
One of the treasures of Zagorje was appreciated since the times of the ancient Romans – thermal waters. Just like Roman soldiers, after exploring we will relax at a local spa. Free time and overnight.

2. dan: RADOBOJ – LUNCH – KRAPINA

After breakfast, first stop on the itinerary – Radoboj, near Krapina. The local museum Radboa tells the story of the long time ago, when these parts were a part of the Panonic Sea. The fossils of fish and tropical vegetation show the landscape much diferrent than the present one, but there are some similarities – the grapevine fossil, oldest of its kind in the world shows the presence of that plant here for millions of years! After the visit to the museum, we’ll take a walk on the “Orchid Trail” that holds an unexpected surprise from the prehistoric times. After the hike it’s time for lunch, accompanied by local wines.

In the afternoon, we visit another gem – the Neanderthal’s Museum in Krapina. The story of the prehistoric times in Zagorje and its inhabitants before the arrival of Homo Sapiens – the Neanderthals – is concluded with a guided tour of the museum after which we return to Zagreb.

It takes only an hour to get from busy Zagreb to the green and peaceful villages of Zagorje. We go to Gornja Stubica where we visit the Peasants’ Revolt Museum situated in a baroque castle that used to belong to the family Oršić. The museum displays the life of the peasants and aristocracy in the times of feudalism, from the 15th until the mid-19th century, and tells us about the 16th century peasants’ revolts and their legendary leader Matije Gubec.
